Titel: PX18 presence noise
Beitrag von: marcomeloni1979 am 5.08.2021 08:15
Hi, i see that here is mostly German but ill give it a try. I just completed a PX18 and it sounds great. I have one issue with the presence control that when its turned all the way up makes like a frying noise. Anybody has any experience with it?

Hi,
Don't mind, this is typical for Marshall like amps.
It is always applying DC voltage on the presence pot. This DC produces that noise.

Stephan

Thank you for your insight  Stephan.
It gets especially intense when i turn the treble volume all the way up. With the normal volume is barely noticeable. O talked to somebody who built the jtm45 from TT but he said he didnt have that problem. He said it could be a leaky cap on the presence pot. On the other hand i was also reading that the Marshall SV20 are also very noisy...

Just for clarification, the noise occurs while rotating the presence pot or is it in the signal when the pot has a certain static  position?

Its really pronounced when its on 10. I know it makes a scratchy noise when turned but this happens in the signal.

Ok, now I understand. It has nothing to do with the DC on the pot. Disregard my first post. Sorry for that.
The root cause may be parasitic oscillations, caused by unproper lead dress. Do you have the 47pF cap between the anodes of V3?

Hi Stephan,
no, in the tube town layout theres is not a resistor between plates in V3. There is one in V2, but its a 100k.
This is the TT layout of the px18 https://www.tube-town.net/cms/userfiles/downloads/px18 -layout.pdf
Thank you for the help!
Marco

Hi ! the PX18 got build many times so far and the layout and schematics are known to be correct so if you have a problem with your build then this could be because you made a mistake just like a missing ground, a wrong component etc. I highly recommend to check all components, the connections and also make sure that the wires are not to long. Also check the pictures on the project page of the PX18 kit to get an idea where to place the wires in the chassis.
Must of the preamp is just like the original but some modifications had to be done around the PI because of the EL84PP powerstage. So be careful if you change something around the PI, this could lead to other problems.

Best regards, Dirk

Thank you Dirk! I followed the schematic and layout faithfully. I mean the amplifier sounds amazing and this kind of sound happens only when both the high treble volume and presence are on 10. Then theres the normal floor noise of course, but thats just normal. Here is the link to a video that documents the noise

Marco,
In your video in the beginning your are talking about a "master volume all way up".
This amp originally does not have a master volume. Is the amp modified?

Yes. I put in a type 3 from the trainwreck pages. Ive taken it away now and the amp is back to stock. No change in the problem. I can put up some pics later so maybe if theres a mistake it can be spotted.

sounds like that the noise only happen with an unusual / extrem potentiometer setup. Is this you standards setup which you use ?

Hey Dirk, yes. Like i said earlier i followed the tube town layout faithfully. Then i installed this that can also be done with alligator clips but ive since removed. Ill put up some detailed pics later. Maybe its just a matter of lead dress...

Sorry Dirk i misread the question. The standard setup i use is the stock setup i followed from tube town. I did try the master volume in the beginning and when i recorded that video the master volume was in place. Ive since removed it but the noise is still there. Everything sounds perfect and the amp sounds amazing. At first i thought it was because i had twisted the cable for the NFB together with the OT secondary, for a neater look. Then i re-routed it like it is in the pictures of the build but it did nothing to attenuate the noise.

Looks like you do not understand me. You wrote: "I have one issue with the presence control that when its turned all the way up makes like a frying noise." Do you use this setting, presence turned up ?
If you turn up the presence just say 80% or 90 % then there is no problem ?

Hey Dirk, i thought that for setup you meant the master volume since we talked about it in the previous post. I ususally have the presence between 5 and 7 so thats not an issue. It starts being very prominent around 8/9 and its onbviously more marked using the high treble ..  I never had a plexi before but it seemed like more noise than it should be.... i tried uploading some gut pics but jpEg format is not allowed, only jpg... have to find a way to change that..

Hard to tell form the pictures.
Maybe you want to reduce or increase the value of the feedback resistor a little bit to see if it gets better or not.

Thank you for your feedback Dirk. I checked the amp this morning and i did notice that some wires in V1 and V2 are microphonic. I dont get any squeals or hum, and the tubes arent microphonic when i tap them. Could that be something that factors in in the noise?

Hi,
I know that many customers think that we take a look at there pictures and know the solution for the problem a few minutes later. Of course it would be great if this would work but it doesn't, there are so many pitfall. If you are unsure how to check the amp or how to troubleshoot it then you should try to get some local help. I know, this is not so easy but give it a try.

I also wrote that you should try to adjust the nfb resistor. You should check this too.

Best regards, Dirk

Hi,

I just checked the PX18  with your settings. The noise which you hear is "normal" with these settings.
I guess you can reduce the noise if the guitar is not so close to the amp. Maybe it is less if you are in an other room too.
If you want to eliminate it then you must adjust the nfb resistors and / or the Presence potentiometer a little bit.

Best regards, Dirk

Thank you Dirk, i will try that. Im also gonna change the bright cap for a lower value one. High treble volume and presence noise go hand in hand. Still love the amp, sound amazing. Very happy with the build!
