Speaking of the presence control of an S40....
I own a load of Klemt/Winston amps myself and have spent quite some time fooling around with them, aim being to get them to sound contemporary.
The prescence/feedback circuit of the S40 is friggin genius and nothing short of a receipt of the knowledge of the boys of Klemt.
If you want to learn more google "Twin-T" filter. This filter is present in most mixers from back when to this day.. Just that in the case of the S40 it´s run backwards. Genius i tell you.
That said its center frequency isn´t exactly aimed at distorted guitar but more so clean sounds. Huh? Yeah well,it works like this that the guitar is a midfocused instrument and as such shifts focus with distortion.
A clean guitar will have it´s center around the 2.5kHz mark or so while a distorted guitar will see this around the 1000Hz mark. A real difference.
That brings that as you make the S40 run into distortion, with intent, due to the install of a master and PPIMV the presence control will lose effect anyways..
So. To make that work again you need to alter the component values of it and herein lies the trap.....as you lower the center freq by increaseing capacitor values amongst other the presence control will also become WAY easier in turning instable.
This...is a balancing act.
When you´re "out" it will be quite evident. The amp will start to oscillate at a low freq.
If you wish we can go indepth, but suffice it to say that i´ve spent some serious time figuring the values needed out...and that it works.
Give it some thought. The presence control of an S40 is one of the more effective,to this day,for a guitar amp in existence. The boys of Klemt were no fools...
